What is Vape E-Juice?

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced vaper, not everyone knows what is actually in vape juice. What chemicals are in vape? Can you get e-juice with nicotine? Read on to find out all this and more.

Vape Juice

Also known as e-liquid or e-juice – is a liquid that is placed in the tank of an e-cigarette or vape that creates vapor. This is what you inhale and exhale as part of the vaping process. When the liquid is heated, depending on its composition, its nature changes. For example, we know that when water is heated to a high temperature, it evaporates by transitioning from liquid to vapor. Vaping juice works in a similar way. Depending on your vape kit and your own temperature preference, vape juice is heated to anywhere between 90°C and 200°C which causes it to change from liquid to vapor. When it does, you inhale, providing you with a burst of flavor when you need it most.

E-Juice Ingredients

Vape juice is a mixture of:

  • Nicotine (but not always!)
  • Propylene Glycol (PG) or Vegetable Glycerin (VG) – or a blend of both
  • Food-grade flavoring Read our guide What is in Vape Juice for more information on these.

Nicotine

Many believe that nicotine in vape juice and in tobacco is the most dangerous chemical, but that's not quite true. However, nicotine is very addictive. When you don't get the nicotine that your brain is used to, you develop an intense craving. This craving doesn't last long (some say it lasts 20 seconds or less) but each second can feel like agony as your brain screams that you need a nicotine fix!

Why is Nicotine So Addictive?

When you consume nicotine in tobacco or when you vape, your brain releases a chemical called dopamine. The release of dopamine "teaches" the brain to repeat the same behavior over and over. This is known as reinforcement.

The more times you consume nicotine, the more "hits" your brain gets. When you stop smoking or use nicotine-free e-juice, your brain no longer gets the usual hits – and it begins to scream to tell you that it needs it!

This is what drives the addictive behavior behind smoking and why it is so hard to quit. You can go the "cold turkey" route so when you switch from cigarettes to vaping you choose an e-juice with zero nicotine content.

Or you can take it step by step by choosing a lower strength nicotine content vaping juice over several months. If you do not want any nicotine, just for the pleasure of vaping juices, you can opt for shortfills. Read more about shortfills here.

Guidelines for Percentages (mg/ml)

  • 3mg 0.3% Lowest nicotine strength, good for sub-ohm or drippers.
  • 6mg 0.6% For smokers who are accustomed to about 10 light cigarettes a day.
  • 12mg 1.2% Suitable for people who smoked between 10 and 15 regular cigarettes a day.
  • 14.9mg 1.49% This is a new standard due to the new raises in nicotine tax where the threshold is 15mg. Suitable for most and is a "just right" strength against regular cigarettes.
  • 18mg 1.8% The best strength for people who smoked 20+ cigarettes a day.

What is Nic Salt?

Nic salts, or nicotine salt, is exactly the same form of nicotine that you would find in tobacco. It can be addictive but nicotine itself carries far fewer toxins and nasties found in the actual tobacco. Nic Salt is the natural state of nicotine.

It has a better absorption rate which means you get a stronger hit of nicotine that lasts longer. "The salt" in Nic Salt changes the pH in the juice which means it is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream, giving you an immediate, stronger hit and one that lasts longer.

But there are other reasons why people choose to use Nic salts; Apart from a better nicotine hit, Nic Salts are a better option for people who do not vape regularly as they provide a more long-lasting nicotine hit. They can be an effective "nicotine replacement option" for people who smoke more than one cigarette a day. Some users say that Nic Salts offer a smoother vape that is also more flavor-rich. Nic Salts are also often found in most disposable vapes.
