Everyone has probably experienced the less delicious taste of  burnt cotton in your coil. That is really not something you want to vape on. With a burnt coil, it is not just that the taste is horrible, the coil itself is also permanently destroyed and must be replaced. Burnt coil gives both a terrible taste experience and costs you money. But do not despair, there are things you can do to avoid burning your coil. Below we have listed the most common things you must be aware of and take care of to best avoid burnt coil.

Keep Your Vape Tank Top Up

If the level of e-juice in your atomizer is low, it might not be able to soak into your wicks as good. On many coil heads, the juice has to be at a certain level to  reach the wicking ports evenly. When less of the e-liquid is in contact with the wick, it doesn’t get soaked up as quickly. When your juice level gets really low, this can cause problems with burning the cotton.

The simplest way to solve this is to this is to keep your tank by the topp up. When the performance starts to get worse and the flavour diminishes, it’s probably time to empty the tank and refill it with new e-juice. One way is to often rotate the tank so the e-juice soaks the wicks all the time. This is less reliable, though, and it gets really hard when your juice level gets too low, so refilling is the best way.

How often do you have to change coils?

Your coils will go bad. Unfortunately, they don’t come with an expiration date. The lifetime of a coil depends on a variety of different factors. Even though you never had a dry hit, a coil will eventually “burn” after extensive use and start to taste bad. There is a number of parameters that you will need to consider when trying to estimate the expected lifespan of your coils.

Prepare your coil before use

It is very important to to “prime” the coil before you start vaping. If you do not do this, you risk burning the coil before you have started vaping. You can either “prime” the wick or fill the tank with e-juice and leave it for 5-10 minutes to let the cotton draw.

To “prime” the wick means that you wet the wick manually before installing and using the coil. Most coils have an opening at the top and holes on the sides where you can see the wick. To “prime” the wick, you must make sure that it is soaked with e-juice, 3-5 drops of e-juice should hold. As long as all visible parts of the wick are moistened. Use the holes on the side and drip a few drops of e-juice, a little in each hole. Be careful not to drown the wick or it will cause leakage.

If you choose to fill the tank with e-juice, it is important that you remember to leave it for 5-10 minutes so that the e-liquid is drawn into the cotton wick. If you do this, you do not need to “prime” in addition.

When using a new coil, the wick is completely dry. In order to be able to vape, the wick must be completely soaked. This is to avoid burnt coil. If the coil is not soaked, there will not be enough e-juice to absorb the heat when you activate the e-cigarette.

Do not chain vape

Some may recognize themselves here – you vape and vape on your e-cigarette without taking any breaks. “Chain vaping” is perhaps a better term for us vapers.

Did you know that by not letting the e-cigarette get a break, you actually risk burning the coil? This happens since you evaporate the e-juice faster, and the wick does not remain soaked as it does not have time to absorb enough e-liquid if you continuously vape over a longer period. It may sound strange, but the wick actually dries up after a long period of chain vaping.

So the solution is very simple: If you notice that the flavor begins to decline, this is a sign that the coil does not have enough e-juice and you are approaching a burn. And so the time is to give the e-cigarette an ever so small break.

Check your wattage settings

First make sure that you are within the wattage range that coil shows that you should be within. If you have not set the e-cigarette within the correct range, the coil will burn much faster. If you have too low a watt, there will be a greater chance of leakage because you draw more than it can vaporise.

Do you have enough e-juice in the tank?

Make sure that you do not completely empty the tank of e-liquid. It is a good idea to refill e-juice regularly so that the tank does not run out. Some atomizers also require that the fluid must be at a certain level to reach the wick. So if the liquid level in your tank is low, it can lead to problems and burn your coil if you are not aware.

The simplest solution is therefore to refill the tank regularly. If you do not want to mix flavors, it is best to just empty the tank first, or switch to a new tank with a new flavor.

Use an e-juice with higher PG ratio

All e-juice consists of a mixture of PG (Propylene glycol) and VG (Vegetable glycerin). PG has a thinner consistency than VG, which in turn means that it is more easily absorbed by the wick.

VG is of thicker consistency and not as easy for the wick to attract. It should be said that some tanks can, and should, be used with a higher VG content. Sub ohm tanks are usually very good at handling higher VG content.

Use an e-juice with less sweetener

If you are using e-liquids with sweetener the sugar content of the juice can caramelize. This can cause the wick to become sticky, and a sticky wick will not be able to attract juice. This in turn will cause the coil to burn.

Use an e-juice without cooling

Most e-liquids with cooling are also using alot of sweeteners to counter the flavor, this can shorten the lifespan of your coils.
